If you’ve been aware of what’s happening at Warner Bros., its streaming service HBO Max, and its new partner company through a merger, Discovery – collectively it’s now Warner Bros. Discovery — then you know it’s been gloomy the past few days.

The HBO Max movie, Batgirl, a complete movie, is canned alongside a sequel to Scoob! There are rumors of massive layoffs at HBO Max with a 70% staff reduction (thanks, the cover), as well as the message that projects in progress, such as DC’s Supergirl movie, will not progress. Warner Bros. Discovery adds HBO Max to Discovery’s streaming service, Discovery+, with less emphasis on premium scripted content that HBO Max fans have come to know and love, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

Amid all this, David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, announced that DC movies will be “reset”. The Hollywood Reporter in a separate report.

“You’re looking at Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman – these are brands that are known all over the world,” Zaslav said during a phone call with investors on Thursday. “We have done a reset. We’ve restructured the company we’re going to focus on, turning it into a team with a 10-year plan focused solely on DC. We believe we can build a much more sustainable business.”

THR notes that DC has strived to rival Marvel Studios, the Disney arm responsible for Marvel releases in theaters, and the company’s streaming service, Disney Plus. Marvel head Kevin Feige is the person who oversees all things Marvel Studios. Zaslav recently brought in retired Disney film manager Alan Horn, who was Feige’s former boss and reportedly a close confidant, to help DC pursue Marvel.

“It is very similar to the structure Alan Horn, Bog Iger [former Disney CEO before current CEO Bob Chapek]and Kevin Feige worked very well together at Disney,” said Zaslav THR. “We are going to focus on quality. We’re not going to release a movie until it’s ready… DC is something we can improve on.”

About movies soon to hit theaters, such as Black Adam, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and Shazam! Fury of the Gods, Zaslav said the company is “very excited about them”.

“We’ve seen them,” he said. “We love them and we think we can make them even better.”
