Boston Celtics head coach Ime Udoka faces ‘significant financial fine’ in addition to one-year banmultiple violations of the Celtics’ code of conduct, Wyc Grousbeck, the team’s majority shareholder, has confirmed.
Grousbeck and president of basketball operations, Brad Stevens, faced the media in the wake of their head coach’s suspension for the entire 2022-2023 season.
Udoka has been banned for the entire 2022-2023 season for violation of team policy.
His forced sabbatical will last until June 30, 2023, at a later date a decision will be made about his future as head coach.
The sophomore coach, who led the C’s to the NBA Finals in his debut season, is said to have had an affair with a female staff member within the Celtics organization.
Stevens explained that the Celtics have a duty to take care of women in their organization after the saga, amid a wave of “rampant bulls***.”
“We have a lot of talented women in our organization and I thought yesterday was very difficult for them,” Stevens said of the rumors and innuendo surrounding Udoka and possible parties involved.

“Nobody can control Twitter speculation and rampant bullshit, but I do think we have a responsibility to make sure we’re there to support them.”
With numerous names thrown into the situation on social media, Grousbeck was explicit that only Udoka would be “financed or reprimanded.”
According to Grousbeck, the origination players are “very concerned” about the situation and indeed the allegations against Udoka.
Joe Mazzulla – who has been an assistant at Boston since 2019 – will become the team’s interim head coach.
Stevens, who was previously the head coach of the Celtics, praised Mazzulla and highlighted what he will add to an undeniably talented roster.

“He’s an exceptionally sharp and talented person,” he said. “I believe strongly in him and his ability to lead people, fix a room and stand behind him.
“And his ability to organize and understand everything that goes into running a team through the season.”
Mazzulla was arrested in 2009 for domestic violence and in 2008 was charged with fighting with the police and underage drinking.
When asked about the battery’s arrest, Stevens admitted that 34-year-old Mazzulla was vetted prior to his appointment in 2019.

“I strongly believe that in a very good way shaped him into who he is today,” Stevens said of the team’s interim head coach.
“He’ll be the first to tell you he’s 110% responsible for that. I’ll be the first to tell you I believe in him.’
Boston was two wins away from winning an NBA championship last season and now faces an entirely unprecedented circumstance just weeks before their first game in the regular season.
