Jota was sidelined on a stretcher on Sunday afternoon in Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Manchester City
Speaking at Liverpool’s press conference, Klopp said: “Jota will be out for a long time, we’re talking months. We’ll see – I don’t want to put a number on it because I hope there will be a positive moment in rehab, but it will take a long time.’
When asked how Jota handled it emotionally, Klopp said: “It’s Diogo and he’s surprisingly OK, so far. Smart boy and reflective. He knew when we carried him off the field when we got onto the field. He explained what had happened and he knew it was serious and affected his World Cup dreams.”
Klopp went on to explain how the injury would exclude Jota from the World Cup. He said: ‘Jota will miss the World Cup, he has a really serious calf injury and we need to recover him. The process begins and that’s it. Very sad news for the boy, for us and for Portugal.’

Jota suffered the injury on Sunday afternoon during Liverpool’s Premier League game against Manchester City at Anfield.
Jota looked hugely uneasy after trying to tap the ball forward while Liverpool were looking to score another goal against their Premier League rivals late in the day.
The 25-year-old quickly received medical attention on his left leg as Jota’s teammates made concerned figures and it soon became apparent that the winger would have to be removed from the game.
Stretchers were called and Jota looked emotional as he walked down the tunnel to be treated as Liverpool insisted on claiming a famous win.
Portugal manager Santos will be shocked by the news, as Jota has been an ever-present figure in the national team since he made his debut in 2020.
He played 29 games for the national team, scored 10 goals and started in the previous five games for Portugal.
