Delegate Marjorie Taylor Greene called Democrats the “party of child abuse” and accused a debate leader of being an “activist” during a showdown with her midterm election opponent on Sunday.
Greene took on Marcus Flowers, a black army veteran and former contractor for the State Department and the Pentagon.
His attempt to oust the incendiary Republican in Northwest Georgia’s 14th district garnered national attention and millions of outside donor dollars.
During their controversial Atlanta Press Club debate, Greene and Flowers frequently spoke of each other to trade personal barbs as moderates desperately tried to restore order.
Flowers repeatedly asked for Greene’s opinion on the 2020 election results, which she voted against, accusing her of “helping and comforting” those who stormed the US Capitol on Jan. 6.
She told him he represented a party platform that supports “educating and sexualizing children in school.”
“My question to you is, why do you care more about those criminals in prison than about the people in our neighborhood?” he asked.
Greene countered that she herself was the victim of January 6 as a member of Congress, adding that she was “completely opposed to what happened.”
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene took on Democrat Marcus Flowers, an Army veteran, in a controversial debate held by the Atlanta Press Club
The pair traded barbs and often talked about each other in the short but heated debate
She turned the attack around to accuse the Biden administration of turning “the Justice Department into a political weapon” against parents and “people who walked into the Capitol and spent nearly two years in prison while Antifa and [Black Lives Matter] rioters who go free are never held accountable.’
The exchange took place during a part of the debate where candidates have 30 seconds to ask each other a question.
Greene, who went first, pressed Flowers on her recent bill that would make giving gender affirming treatment to transgender youth a crime punishable by up to 25 years in prison.
“Marcus, you are a father and you are a representative of the Democratic Party. The Democratic Party is the party of child abuse.
“It is the party that stands for grooming and sexualizing children in school, teaching anti-white racism in the terms of CRT education, and child genital mutilation, children who can’t even get a driver’s license, can’t get a tattoo.” get, and can’t vote.’
She intersects him: ‘How do you stand there and represent the Democratic Party as a father? And do you believe in genital mutilation in children under the age of 18? And puberty blockers that have serious health consequences?’
Greene went on to talk about the moderator telling her her time was up.
‘Because I introduced a bill to ban it and criminalize the mutilation of the genitals of children. Do you support that?’ she pressed.
Flower just responded, “Wow. That was a lot, and God bless you, Marjorie Taylor Greene. If you really believe that, I pray for you.’
Earlier in the debate, Flowers asked her if President Joe Biden has won the 2020 election.
“Joe Biden is the President of the United States, Marcus,” she snapped back.
He said, “Absolutely, but you pushed a big lie that he didn’t win the election.”
Greene tried to replicate her previous claims of widespread in-race voter fraud before the moderators wrestled back control.
At another time, the congressman attacked one of the debate’s three moderators after he asked her what fact-checking process she used before making her more controversial statements on social media.
Greene had been stripped of her committee duties early in her first term because of violent rhetoric she promoted online before coming to Congress. Her personal Twitter account has been suspended this year for “repeated violations” of the site’s COVID-19 misinformation policy.
“Can you tell me what’s controversial about defending this freedom of speech, or what’s controversial about defending our border, or say we should, what — can you tell me, give me an example?” she asked.
The moderator declined and asked his question again.
“No, you do that every time we have a debate,” he replied.
Greene appeared to claim victory after the debate in a post on her Telegram channel
Flowers also set themselves up as the victor, and both closed their posts with fundraising appeals
“I ask a question that’s obvious, and you say, ‘What do you mean?’ You were kicked out of your committees for saying things were controversial. You apologized for controversial statements, right? Those kind of things. What is your process for checking facts and vetting the things you say in public?’
Greene replied, “The things I say in public are the truth and that’s why they are so offensive to Democratic activists in the media, just like you.”
The match-up between Flowers and Greene is one of the most expensive races of the 2022 election cycle. Both candidates have funneled more than $7 million into the race.
Both also declared victory after Sunday’s debate.
Flowers wrote on Twitter immediately after the event: “I’ve just come off the debate stage with Marjorie Taylor Greene and it’s clear our message wins and she’s upset.”
Greene shared a photo of herself on her Telegram channel, with the words “MTG wins debate” and “Defeats Democratic opposition.”
